5 Prompt Mistakes That Waste Your Time
These five habits cost most people hours every week. Fix each in under a minute.
Mistake 1: Vague Instructions
"Write something about my product" gives the model nothing to grab. The fix: name the product, the audience, the goal and the length. Four specifics turn a coin-flip into a usable draft. Specificity is free — use it.
Mistake 2: Missing Context
The model doesn't know your business, your brand voice or your constraints. Add a context line: who the customer is, what the product does, what tone the brand uses. One sentence of context prevents three rounds of re-prompting.
Mistake 3: Asking for Too Much
A prompt that asks for a strategy, a calendar, copy and a budget in one shot gets four shallow answers. Split it: one task per prompt, build the pieces, then combine. Depth beats breadth every single time.
Mistake 4: Ignoring Output Format
A wall of text is hard to use. Ask for a table, a numbered list, JSON or a specific structure and the output becomes immediately actionable. Format requests are the cheapest quality boost in prompt engineering.
Mistake 5: Re-Prompting Instead of Refining
When the output is wrong, most people retype the whole prompt from scratch. Better: keep what worked, add one constraint, and iterate. "Good, but make it 30% shorter and remove the second bullet" gets you there faster than starting over.
